Thank you for leading me to Dr. Silver, I am a big fan of his work. Your thoughts will be used to encourage teachers of students with significant cognitive disabilities to raise the bar. Can you please refer me to a book or website that gives more information and practical strategies related to shared reading in high school? Ever since I worked with you my 3rd year ...Debbie! Ever since I worked with you my 3rd year of teaching, I have read aloud Bill Bryson's book to my students. I find that kids learn how to pronounce words correctly because they hear you say it out loud, and you have the ability to pause and discuss the "Aha" moments in the text or questions that arise in our heads as we read through the text. Yes, I would agree with you - so many teachers would prefer to have the kids read silently so that they can grade or do something else (which just irks the crap out of me). I miss you and I miss your writing! I just started back up last week actually :) Love you and miss you!Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02263604490170060075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-463748014603510099.post-6300626852264669322011-08-11T16:55:52.479-04:002011-08-11T16:55:52.479-04:00Interesting post. I didn't have many experiences with parent conferences before I came to Brookside; it wasn't that parents weren't involved, it was just that our team didn't really feel the need to have them. And it was always when there was a problem and it felt very much like a mugging - and sometimes WE were mugged by the parents! Even though you are no longer our team leader, your mentality and your philosophy lives on in our team area. We have had a few parent conferences already, but we are trying to be pro-active, not reactive. Many of the conferences have had very positive and promising outcomes, and I want to thank you personally for how they have turned out so well. Thank you for being a role model and an inspiration.Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02263604490170060075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-463748014603510099.post-9334224959077435352007-09-23T21:50:00.000-04:002007-09-23T21:50:00.000-04:00I am in agreeance with you, Debbie. We both know that doesn't necessarily imply that teaching above level will involve enrichment, excitement or even rigor. I thought we had moved beyond that way of thinking; it reminds me of how teachers taught identified gifted children when I was a middle school youngster.Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02263604490170060075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-463748014603510099.post-13489558764027896562007-09-04T19:45:00.000-04:002007-09-04T19:45:00.000-04:00Rigor...I'm thinking...gotta have differentiation....Rigor...

I'm thinking...gotta have differentiation.

Here is a quote I use A LOT in the classroom: "Fair is everyone gets what they need, not everyone gets the same."

Rigor, like time, is relative. Like a computer, it depends on what else is being processed by that amazingly resilient human brain. For example, even as an adult, what is rigorous when I am well rested and feeling competent is measurably different than when I am overwhelmed and overtired.

My goodness, keeping track of all of that would surely baffle even the most brilliant FCAT statisticians. But then, measurement of rigor is an entirely different blog entry.

Thank you for reminding me to think about this important topic tonight. Just wait to see what the kids are going to do tomorrow!!!
SuziSuzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05211330808125083845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-463748014603510099.post-77564076879337948572007-08-01T09:33:00.000-04:002007-08-01T09:33:00.000-04:00Debbie:Excellent, enjoyable blog. I know that my first few years were of my trying to create my teacher identity, learning how to manage my classroom while producing lesson plans that I thought (at the time) to be valuable. I have learned that the veteran teachers have MUCH to offer in the light of how kids work, how lessons should be taught and how to brace against those who resist change.

I am very touched that you think so highly of us youngsters and I am honored that you feel the desire to teach us how to become better teachers.
